A Family-Run Chiang Mai Elephant Sanctuary Beside Doi Inthanon

Elephants first: no riding, no performances

We don't offer riding of any kind. We don't do tricks, painting or shows. The elephants decide how the day goes. Some days they wander off to eat bamboo. Some days they head down to the water. We follow them, and so do you.

That's the whole idea. You don't get a show. You get a closer look at how elephants actually live.

Founded in 2016 by Toi and Toto

Elephant Land was started in 2016 by Toi and Toto [ตรวจสอบ: confirm the founding year and how Toi and Toto would like to be named on the homepage]. It's still a family place. The people who greet you in the morning are the same people who look after the elephants every day.

Where we are and how you get here (pickup from Chiang Mai Old Town)

The sanctuary is at Ban Khun Puai village, near Doi Inthanon National Park, in the mountains outside Chiang Mai. The last stretch of the road is off-road. From Chiang Mai Old Town the drive takes about [ตรวจสอบ: drive time and distance from Old Town].

Half-day and full-day visits include pickup from Old Town and nearby areas. Please confirm your exact pickup details when you book. Our booking office is at 57 Kotchasarn Road, Changklan, Chiang Mai 50100. Please note that this is our office, not the sanctuary.

How to Choose the Best Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai

There are many elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai, and the word "sanctuary" gets used a lot. The best elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai for you is one that meets clear welfare standards and suits the way you travel. Here's a simple way to check.

What an ethical sanctuary looks like: no riding, no shows, small groups

Welfare-minded travellers usually look for these signs:

  • No riding at all. That includes riding with a seat and riding bareback.
  • No performances. No tricks, no painting, no posing for photos on command.
  • Room to be elephants. Space to walk, forage, rest and spend time with each other.
  • Small groups. Fewer people means less noise and less pressure on the elephants.
  • More watching, less handling. Guests mostly observe, and the elephants can walk away whenever they like.
  • Honest stories. Staff can tell you where each elephant came from and how they live now.

Questions to ask before you book any sanctuary

  • Do any guests ride the elephants, ever?
  • Are there shows, tricks or staged photos?
  • How many guests join each group?
  • What will we actually do with the elephants, and for how long?
  • Where did the elephants come from?
  • Who runs the sanctuary, and who looks after the elephants day to day?
  • Is pickup included, and what happens if it rains?

A good sanctuary will answer all of these clearly. If the answers are vague, ask again.

How Chiangmai Elephant Land meets each standard

  • No riding: none, on any program.
  • No performances: none. The elephants set the pace.
  • Small groups: we keep groups small, and bookings start at 2 people [ตรวจสอบ: maximum group size per round].
  • Family-run: since 2016, by Toi and Toto [ตรวจสอบ: founding year and founders' names].
  • A quiet natural setting: forest and hills beside Doi Inthanon National Park.
  • Community: the visit is shared with the local Karen community [ตรวจสอบ: the Karen community's exact role at the sanctuary, per the Karen People page].
  • Honest stories: our team will tell you about each elephant during your visit [ตรวจสอบ: number of elephants and each one's background. Don't publish until the client confirms].

Our Elephant Experiences: Find the Right Visit for You

Every program follows the same idea: elephants first, nature around you, and time to slow down. Pick the one that fits your day. You can see all programs on our elephant experiences page.

Half Day Morning or Afternoon Program

Short on time? The half day is a gentle start. Choose the morning or the afternoon and still have the rest of your day free in Chiang Mai [ตรวจสอบ: duration, pickup times and activities included in each half-day program].

One Day Visit to Elephant Land

A full day gives you more time with the elephants and more time in the forest, with no rush [ตรวจสอบ: duration, activities and meals included].

Elephant Observation, Trekking & Bamboo Raft (1 or 2 days)

This one suits travellers who like to move. Here, trekking means hiking on foot through the forest, near the elephants. It never means riding them [ตรวจสอบ: confirm that 'trekking' means walking/hiking alongside the elephants]. Then you float back on a bamboo raft. Choose one day, or two days for a slower pace [ตรวจสอบ: route, duration and what is included on the 1-day and 2-day versions].

Overnight Stay at Elephant Land

Want to stay overnight at an elephant sanctuary near Chiang Mai? This is it. You see the elephants in the evening and again in the early morning, when the forest is quiet. Read more about the Overnight Stay at Elephant Land [ตรวจสอบ: what the accommodation is like and what the stay includes].

Private or customised visits for families and groups

Travelling as a family, a couple or a group of friends? We can plan a private or customised visit. Bookings start at 2 people.

A quick guide (our suggestion): couples often like the overnight stay for the quiet moments. Families with younger children may find a half day easier. Active groups tend to enjoy the trekking and bamboo raft. Not sure? Ask us and we'll help you choose.

A Day With the Elephants: What to Expect

Meeting the elephants and learning their stories

First, we say hello. Our team introduces each elephant: their name, their character and their story. Then you spend time with them, at their pace [ตรวจสอบ: which activities are included, e.g. feeding, walking with the elephants, and whether bathing is part of the program].

Nature, the forest and the Karen community

The elephants aren't the only part of the day. You're in the hills near Doi Inthanon, among trees, streams and fresh air. You'll also learn a little about the Karen people who share this land with us [ตรวจสอบ: how the Karen community takes part in the visit].

What to bring and what to wear

For a day outdoors in northern Thailand, these are usually a good idea:

  • Light clothes you don't mind getting muddy
  • Shoes or sandals with good grip
  • A change of clothes and a small towel
  • Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A refillable water bottle
  • A light rain jacket in the rainy season

[ตรวจสอบ: whether the sanctuary provides clothing, towels, water or lunch]
