About Us – Chiang Mai Elephant Land

Our Story

Chiang Mai Elephant Land was founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Toi and Toto. Growing up in the mountains of Northern Thailand, they both witnessed the challenges elephants face in modern times. Many were forced into logging, street begging, or tourism activities that left them tired and mistreated. Toi and Toto dreamed of a better way — a place where elephants could live in freedom and peace, while also supporting the local Karen hill tribe community that has cared for elephants for generations.

What began as a small family project has grown into a sanctuary that welcomes visitors from around the world. Yet at its heart, Chiang Mai Elephant Land is still about one simple promise: giving elephants the safe and natural life they deserve.

Our Mission

Life for elephants in Thailand has not always been easy. Too many have spent their years performing tricks, carrying tourists, or losing their forest homes to farming. At Chiang Mai Elephant Land, our mission is to change that story.

Here, elephants are free to live as they would in the wild — foraging for the wide variety of foods that make up their natural diet, bathing in rivers, and enjoying long mud baths that protect their skin. With many square kilometers of forest next to Doi Inthanon National Park, they have the space, safety, and peace that every elephant needs.

Every visit to our sanctuary directly supports this mission. By walking alongside the elephants, feeding them, and observing their natural behavior, you become part of their journey to recovery and freedom.

Our Values

  • Kindness to Elephants – We never offer rides or shows. We believe in treating elephants with dignity and care.
  • Respect for Nature – Protecting the forest and rivers that sustain both elephants and people.
  • Community First – Working hand in hand with the Karen hill tribe to preserve culture and create sustainable livelihoods.
  • Responsible Travel – Welcoming guests in small groups to ensure a respectful and meaningful experience.

Looking Ahead

Many of our elephants once lived hard lives. They carried heavy loads, walked on hot asphalt, or performed for tourists. Today, they finally have the chance to rest, heal, and thrive in their natural environment.

Our vision for the future is to rescue more elephants, expand the land they can roam on, and continue supporting the Karen community who share their knowledge and traditions with us. With your visit, you help make this future possible.

Together, we can protect elephants, preserve culture, and inspire a more ethical way to travel in Thailand.
